What Level of Chimney Inspection is Right for Me?

At Monocacy Chimney Care Inc, our technicians offer the following levels of inspections for chimneys and fireplaces:

  • Level I:

In a Level I inspection, your chimney service technician will examine the readily accessible portions of the chimney. These areas include the exterior, interior, and chimney connections. Your technician will look for the basic soundness of the structure, flue, obstructions, and combustible deposits. Along with that, the technician will be looking for the basic appliance installation and connection. We recommend Level I inspections for chimneys under the same conditions of continued service and use of the same appliance.

  • Level II:

During a Level II inspection, your chimney service technician will perform a more thorough examination. A Level II inspection includes a complete visual inspection of the interior using a video scanning device. The technician will insert the device into the flue and examine all internal surfaces and joints. Additionally, the technician will examine accessible portions of the chimney that could be in attics, crawl spaces, and basements. We use this method to address proper clearances from combustibles in accessible locations.

We recommend a Level II inspection when changing an appliance. Changes include appliance type and shape, materials, or fuel source of a different kind. Additionally, our crew recommends a Level II inspection to sell a property or after an operation malfunction. Chimney fires, seismic and weather events are all indicators that warrant a Level II inspection.

  • Level III:

If a Level I or II inspection yields hidden hazards and requires special tools for evaluation, consider Level III inspection. A Level III inspection addresses the proper construction and condition of concealed portions of the chimney and flue. Removal necessary for permanently attached parts of the chimney is required for a Level III inspection. We will provide a full proposal and scope of the project during a Level III inspection.
